Synopsis
When you hear The Toxic Avenger, most movie fans immediately think of the cult 1984 Troma classic — a weird, over-the-top mix of gore, campy humor, and environmental satire. The 2023 Hollywood reboot directed by Macon Blair takes that strange formula, modernizes it, and adds some star power, creating a film that’s equally outrageous yet surprisingly polished.
Storyline
The movie follows Winston Gooze (Peter Dinklage), a janitor struggling with a terminal illness and financial troubles, who accidentally falls into toxic waste. Instead of dying, he transforms into a deformed yet super-powered mutant known as The Toxic Avenger. With his grotesque new body but a heart still full of kindness, Winston begins fighting against corporate greed and crime, especially those led by the ruthless villain Bob Garbinger (played hilariously by Kevin Bacon).
Performances
-
Peter Dinklage shines in the lead, balancing tragic vulnerability with the absurdity of a mutated anti-hero.
-
Kevin Bacon is clearly having fun, chewing up the screen as the corrupt CEO.
-
Elijah Wood is almost unrecognizable in his freaky supporting role, adding an extra layer of dark comedy.
-
Supporting cast members like Taylour Paige bring both grit and charm.
Tone & Style
Unlike the original’s low-budget chaos, this version feels slick but still embraces camp. The humor is dark, gory, and unapologetically ridiculous, often blending slapstick violence with satirical jabs at modern issues like healthcare, pollution, and corporate exploitation. The gore effects are exaggerated but done in a way that feels cartoonish rather than purely disturbing — very much in the Troma spirit.
Highlights
-
The action sequences are wildly creative, often grotesque but funny.
-
The practical effects mixed with modern CGI give the film a unique visual identity.
-
The soundtrack matches the over-the-top energy perfectly.
Downsides
For casual viewers unfamiliar with the franchise, the excessive gore and bizarre tone might feel overwhelming. It’s definitely not a film for everyone — you need to enjoy camp and satire to fully appreciate it. Some pacing issues also appear in the middle act.
Verdict
The Toxic Avenger (2023) is a bold, bizarre, and blood-soaked reboot that pays tribute to its cult origins while updating the formula for a new generation. It’s gross, funny, and weirdly heartwarming in moments — exactly what a Toxic Avenger movie should be.
